Foundation Medicine and Flatiron Health, both significant players in cancer genomics, have announced their plans for a joint clinic-genomic database, based on the electronic health records (EHRs) of 20,000 cancer patients. The aim is to complement their tumour sample genomic data with contextual information from the patients’ EHRs. There is some controversy surrounding the fact that patients are not required to consent to the use of their data by researchers as they do not own their own genetic data and even have difficulty in accessing their own EHRs.
