"Symptom management is an essential component of treating patients with cancer. Patients with cancer frequently experience symptoms related to disease and treatment, which can contribute to distress and complications. However, symptoms during treatment of cancer are frequently undetected and untreated. Interventions that detect and treat symptoms may improve outcomes in people undergoing treatment for cancer. Symptom monitoring using electronic systems that facilitate patient-reported outcome (PRO) surveys via the internet, mobile applications, or automated telephone interfaces have been shown to be feasible for identifying symptoms that can be treated by clinicians.8 Prior studies have reported improved outcomes for physical function, symptom control, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), hospitalizations, and survival when such electronic systems are used by patients receiving cancer treatment.
